You reach the top of Mount Tuffudesu and there it is, right in front of you. Dark basalt and tuff stone, a single nave, and wind that doesn’t ask permission. Our Lady of Bonaria is the highest church in the Sassarese, three kilometres from Osilo. Step inside, look toward the square-shaped apse, and notice the stone choir seats set on either side of the altar. Then walk out onto the forecourt. On a clear day, your gaze runs over the Gulf of Asinara and can stretch as far as Corsica.
How to get there: the final stretch of the climb follows a paved path leading to the panoramic forecourt.
View: a panorama of more than one hundred kilometres across the Gulf of Asinara and the Sassarese, reaching Corsica on the clearest days.
Annual event: every Ferragosto, a procession sets off from the parish church of the Immaculate Conception carrying the statue of Our Lady of Bonaria, placed in the niche behind the altar. In the evening, the route is followed in reverse.
Nearby links mentioned: the Malaspina Castle on Mount Tuffudesu. In Osilo, also Our Lady of the Rosary, the Holy Spirit, and San Lorenzo in the Valley of the Mills.
